Sitting 148: Regular spiritual practice

There are things which we should do on a regular basis during our life on earth, if we are a practising spiritualist, but unfortunately many of you do not treat your development with the dedication befitting the task you are trying to accomplish. The trouble with many of you is that you try much too hard and you will try to work every day instead of, as we have said, working four or possibly five days a week at the most. Take your time and allow things to develop slowly and the end result will be a much stronger and better development of the gift you are working on and consequently a better form of mediumship than if you push yourself. We would relate to you the story of the two men who, in meditation, came to a high white wall which blocked their progress. One of them tried to find a way round the wall but could find no way to go forward. For three or four days he tried to go forward and then he became impatient and forced his way through.

He found on the other side rolling fields as far as the eye could see and nothing else so he turned away from the wall and walked another way. The other man took a different view of things and each day he would walk along the wall for a short time, and, realising that patience was required, he kept coming back and walking the wall looking for an entrance. He did this for six or seven weeks and then one day he found a gateway but the gate was closed to him. A few days later he found the gate had opened and he walked through and discovered rolling fields stretching to the horizon . He also saw a large house a few miles away so he slowly walked the path leading to the house. On arrival he walked through the door and discovered he had entered a house of wisdom where teachers and helpers conveyed him to different rooms where each room taught him a small part of the wisdom’s of life. These wisdom’s which are sometimes called ‘The ancient Wisdom’s’ but are the ‘Eternal Wisdom’s’ were bestowed upon him because he had the patience which is required before they were revealed to him. And for his patience he was taught much sooner than the other man who could not wait.
